Pill Community allotment declared open.

Community

On Friday 26th April 2024 Pill Unity Group together with partners and organisations who have played a part in the incredible journey, joined together to celebrate the opening of the new community space situated in the heart of Pill.

Friday saw the official opening with a ribbon ceremony cut by The rightful Mayor of Newport Trevor Watkins.

Linc Cymru’s regeneration of the Constables Close area of Pill aims to support the wellbeing of its residents by making it a safer, more pleasant place to live.

The opening is fully supported as part of the regeneration plan and is a key open space for local people.

Shelly Leonard, Social value officer for Linc Cymru Housing Association says that ‘This wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and time given by Julie Fish, Michael Parry-Jones from Newport City Homes, LCB Construction, Newport City Council together with Mens Shed, Linc Cymru Housing Association and others. They have worked tirelessly to convert an underused and overgrown allotment site into the amazing and vibrant community space called Pill Unity Gardens’.

The opening was certainly a celebration of unity as the community came together to commemorate the occasion. Music was sang by Pill Primary School, children enjoyed arts and crafts and toasted marshmallows and an array of foods handmade by different families in the neighbourhood was enjoyed by all.

The space hosts areas for communal produce, a seating area surrounded by beautiful fruit trees, well kept flattened allotments ready for planting, a mud kitchen and entertainment area. Towards the rear is a heated, sheltered communal hub that can be used for community activities and meetings.

The area is a little green retreat in a busy urban area.

Opening this community led Unity Garden has allowed surrounding residents the chance to grow produce, keep healthy and active, build relationships with fellow community members and educate the younger generation on gardening and growing your own fruit and vegetables.

The notice board (donated by Lovells and LCB Construction) on entrance features events throughout the year and any community news for the public to part take in if you are interested in learning more.
