One of Linc’s oldest tenants celebrates 100th birthday.

It was easy to spot Megan’s home as it was adorned with banners and balloons marking this milestone birthday!

Megan, from Penallta, is one of Linc’s oldest tenants and has lived in her home at Duffryn Street for most of her life.

She was born at the property back in 1921 and lived there with her parents until she married Mr Evans in 1945. The couple then moved to Porthcawl, where they started their own grocery business.

Twenty years later, together with her husband, Megan moved back to her family home to look after her mother and she has lived in the house ever since. 

“Megan was really happy on her birthday, and so pleased to see us,” says Linc Executive Director, Nicola Smith who, along with Housing Officer Claire Jenkins (pictured with her daughter, Florence) presented Megan with the gift on her birthday.

“She started to get a bit emotional when she opened the card from us and was told the presents were from Linc, but said it was because she was just really happy. It looked like she was truly being made a fuss of as there were banners on the window and balloons.”

Megan is a cheerful character who enjoys listening to talking books from her local library. She is also a keen gardener and is especially fond of an old apple tree that she bought and planted for Mr Evans’ birthday many years ago. She delights in sharing the apples with friends and neighbours and making her own puree from them.

“It was lovely to surprise Mrs Evans on her birthday,” says Claire Jenkins, whose daughter, Florence, made Megan a card. “Turning 100 is such an important occasion so it was fantastic that we could help her celebrate it with a special gift for her to enjoy.”
