Our proposal to develop the land at Lysaght Parc, Lliswerry (formally known as the Orb Works) generated local interest at a Consultation Event held at the Mary Dunn Club in Newport on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th January. Visitors were given the opportunity to meet representatives from Linc and Morrisons to discuss and view our proposals. Many visitors put 'pen to paper' and gave their feedback, ideas and overall support.
Our planning application for the refurbishment of the Lysaght Institute and the development of a Morrisons Food Store will be submitted to Newport at the end of January (2010).
It was clear from talking to visitors over the weekend that the Lysaght Institute is of real cultural significance to the community and Newport at large. Many shared their interesting stories and anecdotes about their past involvement with and memories of 'The Stute'. Our proposals, if they receive widespread support and planning consent from Newport City Council, will lead to the opening of a Morrisons Food Store and the Lysaght Institute being fully restored to the iconic building it was all those years ago. Our intention is to retain ownership of the Institute and provide facilities that will be of benefit to the community and community enterprises. Visitors also told us that they currently had to travel to Morrisons in Rogerstone and welcomed the proposal to have a Morrisons store closer to home.
The land will also see the development of 180 affordable new homes which will be available for rent and sale. The first 69 homes will all be for rent and work starts on site in February 2010 with a completion date estimated to be March 2011.
The total capital cost of this proposed major community regeneration project is estimated to be £50 million. It will generate jobs for the construction industry and approximately 250 employment opportunities at the new Morrisons store.
